When showrunners need a talented, artistic, capable, and tireless visual artist to lead a crew, I raise my hand and say, “Yes!”. In 15 years as a Director of Photography, I have developed quick, natural instincts at docu-follow and ITM shooting, allowing me to follow action to the point where I anticipate the action. When shooting a scene, my editor instincts take over: anticipate cut points / create seamless flow of conversation+action / add variety and artistry to every scene. Check, check, check.
Becoming integrated with your storyline, I’m also able to offer direction to talent, which can elevate the scene. The standard content is covered, but with variety and artistry. I love the use of foreground, and always utilize it in my scenes. And amid the high-stakes pressure and deadlines, you’ll see us having a good time on set – gets us better results, camaraderie and all that. Don’t be surprised to see us smiling.
I also use lighting to create scenes and interviews that have a cinematic, natural feel: warm key lights, cool edges, natural backgrounds … all echo the way our eyes naturally see life. When the pictures look good, it's easier for the viewer to let the information sink in ... not to mention keeping the talent happy.
